India’s ambitious plan for education

Filed under: Schools — Esmeralda @ 8:41 am

ISF is extremely happy about India’s new law – the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Bill – making education a fundamental right for every child in the country. It is estimated that about 10 million children are out of school in India, with a large share being young girls.  According to TIME, government statistics show that while about 25% of girls drop out of school between the ages of 6 and 10, that rate doubles to more than 50% for girls ages 10-13. Apart from addressing the gender bias, the Education Bill will guarantee that 25% of places in private schools are reserved for poor children.

Since the very beginning, ISF has been working hard on both fronts. On the one hand, the management team makes sure under-privileged families are able to send their children to the school thanks to the ISF school endowment that offers every year grants to 51 children out of 212 enrolled. On the other hand, the ISF management team puts a lot of effort to encourage young girls to attend school every day, and is very proud that 42% girls make up the school population.
